Step 2 Diet for High Cholesterol

provided by Healthcastle.com Nutrition

Note: The American Heart Association no longer uses the terms "Step 1" and "Step 2" in reference to heart-healthy diets effective 2000. These terms, however, still appear in some older materials and journal articles.

The Step 2 diet was created and recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program NCEP when the blood cholesterol does not improve after 3-month trial of Step 1 Diet.

In May 2001 the NCEP released new guidelines for cholesterol management. The American Heart Association accepted and endorsed this report. For people at high risk or who have known cardiovascular disease, NCEP and AHA have adopted and now recommend the new Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet. The TLC diet is the "next generation" of the Step 2 diet
