Step 1 Diet for High Cholesterol
provided by Healthcastle.com Nutrition
Note: The American Heart Association no longer uses the terms "Step 1" and "Step 2" in reference to heart-healthy diets. These terms, however, still appear in some older materials and journal articles.
The Step 1 Diet was created and recommended by the National Cholesterol Education Program NCEP as an inital diet for most patients with high cholesterol. This diet was usually recommended for a period of 3 months. If blood cholesterol does not improve, Step 2 Diet was then recommended.
In May 2001 the NCEP released new guidelines for cholesterol management. The American Heart Association accepted and endorsed this report. For people at high risk or who have known cardiovascular disease, NCEP and AHA have adopted and now recommend the new Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet.
